The
journey started in 1973 when Roland started an eight year stay in
West Africa. By the time he left in 1981, he had seen indigenous
people of Kumasi, Ghana casting molten bronze using methods handed
down thru the centuries. The hot fires started a burning desire
to cast metal that continues to today. A red hot crucible gets the
adrenaline flowing like nothing else in the world. Your juices start
flowing like the sweat off your brow and arms. To control molten
metal at 2,000 degrees is no small task. In 1986 we started casting
precious metal; gold and silver weighting grams. This lead to presently
casting bronze at 150 pounds a pour.
The
foundry started in the house, and as it out grew the space, it
moved to the 'backyard', presently it occupies an industrial warehouse
space. We are fully equipped to cast anything from medallions
to monuments. We have a furnace with a melting capacity of 380
pounds of bronze, a computer controlled dewaxing kiln, heavy lifting
equipment, TIG welding and air metal finishing tools. We use silicon
bronze, an alloy which does not contain zinc or lead, both nasty
toxins. We use electric resistant heating source for our kilns
and small crucible furnaces. We use propane and natural gas for
the larger furnances. These are clean burning fuels and we conserve
energy with space age insulation and computerized controls. Our
wax is recycled instead of burning it, this greatly reduces the
production of toxic fumes. Using the 'lost wax method' we cast
metal into traditional investment molds and ceramic shell molds.
Our foundry offers all of the services found in major foundries;
from mold making to casting, chasing and finishing with patinas
to siting and installation, with individual attention associated
with a small foundry.
